The success of any business can be traced back to management. For this reason, managers need to be able to adapt to and address the changing needs of not only their customs, but even more importantly, their employees. Change is always occurring, and the manner in which an employee’s needs are attended to in present day society, is rather different from that of 100 years ago. The development from the 19th and early 20th century management strategies, to the current management understanding, was not a change that occurred overnight. It was a gradual movement from the earliest management philosophy, the Classical Perspective, to the Scientific Management Approach, to today’s Humanistic Perspective. Developed in the 19th century, the Classical Perspective addressed the issue of maximizing efficiency. Historically, during this time period, a majority of people in the workforce were immigrants with no previous training or knowledge of the jobs they were set to perform. Thus, managers were burdened with the task of converting these unskilled workers into employees who performed their jobs correctly and in a timely manner, despite cultural barriers, in attempt to turn businesses into efficient operating machines.
